Today we’re demo-ing the old balcony where the new deck will be built — we got rained out yesterday — so we hope to have new progress photos to share soon, likely by Monday if weather cooperates.
While we wait, we wanted to share a smart, budget-friendly kitchen idea that really caught our eye: stainless steel countertops. Linn and her husband found a creative, affordable way to achieve professional-looking stainless steel counters for about $400 for roughly 20 square feet. A big-box store quoted them about $3,000 for a similar installation. They started by creating a plywood template sized precisely to their counters and then worked with a local sheet metal shop to cut and bend 20-gauge stainless steel around that template.
Next, they installed the plywood template over their existing Formica counters, then fit the pre-bent stainless steel panels on top. The metal arrived protected with a removable film to prevent scratches during handling and installation.
This approach turned out to be far more economical than many other countertop materials. If you want attractive, durable counters without spending a fortune on granite or marble, this is a method worth considering.
