We’re back with another House Crashing feature, this time in Richmond’s Westover Hills neighborhood. Lori and her husband Greg welcomed us into their beautifully renovated home, and we couldn’t resist sharing the highlights from our visit. Sunlight, thoughtful details, and smart updates make this Westover Hills home a delightful example of classic charm meeting modern living.
From the moment you step through the front door you’re greeted by a bright, airy entry and a beautiful staircase that sets the tone for the entire house. Tall windows and high ceilings create a warm, sundrenched atmosphere that carries through the living spaces, making the home feel open and welcoming.
To the right of the staircase, the living room showcases substantial molding and impressive ceiling height. A clever armoire doubles as a hidden home office—stable storage behind closed doors when not in use—showing how function and style can coexist. The fireplace is a standout focal point: crisp white-painted brick framed with delicate artwork and simple decor that keeps the room feeling clean and refined.
The kitchen is a true centerpiece. After removing a wall and adding a family room at the rear of the house, Lori and Greg created an open, flowing layout ideal for daily life and entertaining. Classic white cabinetry paired with sleek black granite counters delivers a timeless, elegant aesthetic. The standout feature is an exceptionally heavy butcher block island—found on Craigslist—that brings rustic warmth and character to the otherwise streamlined space. Its worn surface and solid construction add a lived-in, inviting quality.
Directly beyond the kitchen is the added family room, which feels like an extended living area or sunroom thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows that flood the space with natural light. A cozy sectional anchors the room, while a full wall of built-ins provides book storage and media space, accommodating a flat-screen TV without sacrificing style. A budget-friendly slipper chair from Target proves you can find impressive pieces without overspending, and layered textures make the family area both comfortable and functional.
A charming half bathroom off the main living area demonstrates attention to detail: vintage boxes repurposed on the wall serve as practical storage for toilet paper, towels, and essentials while adding personality to a small space.
The dining room leans toward farmhouse chic, featuring super-high curtains and a gilded chandelier that elevates the room’s style. Decorative elements like an oversized blue glass jar add visual interest and a touch of whimsy, balancing rustic and refined elements throughout the home.
The guest bedroom offers a serene retreat with soft tonal colors and ample natural light. A rescued and reupholstered chair provides comfortable seating and tells a story of thoughtful sourcing and DIY refresh. A soft yellow dresser contributes subtle contrast and a calming palette that’s perfect for visitors.
The private backyard is an inviting outdoor living area centered around a hammock and chiminea—ideal for gatherings and casual relaxation. An expanded patio off the kitchen includes a full outdoor dining setup, making it easy to move between indoor and outdoor entertaining. Their dog Maggie clearly enjoys the space as much as the family does.
