Adding a Dining Bench to Our Table

Rearranging Our Living/Dining Room: Bench Seating That Works

We recently rearranged our living/dining room to better suit our open-plan layout. Moving the dining table into the large space next to the kitchen was exactly what we wanted for flow and togetherness, but it left the living area feeling a bit compromised. When we removed an armchair to make room for the table, the seating for the living area dropped to three—two on the sofa and one in the remaining chair. It didn’t feel right for conversation or casual lounging.

Although most of our true lounging happens in the den, where seating isn’t an issue, I wanted the shared living/dining room to function well for both dining and relaxing. Inspiration came from a photo of a round table with a curved banquette. The idea of cushioned bench seating at the dining table clicked: a bench could serve double duty, providing dining seating while also being available for living room guests.

I decided to bring our small mudroom bench into the room to try the arrangement. Immediately it felt like a jackpot. The bench provided comfortable seating at the table and could be pulled out for extra living-room seating when needed. Because I wanted the mudroom to remain functional, we picked up another bench—this one slightly taller and leggier, which made it more comfortable at the dining table. The original bench returned to the mudroom, and the new bench stayed in the living/dining area.

Adding the second bench also brought a nice bonus: under-bench storage. That extra hidden space made it easy to store items out of sight yet keep the room tidy. The benches became a practical and attractive feature: they look right at home against the table, they improve the flow of the open plan, and they add flexibility for guests and everyday family use.

With the benches in place, the living/dining room now has a U-shaped conversation area again and comfortably seats five people. The bench setup makes meals feel cozier—there’s something inherently intimate and pleasant about sharing a seat—and it’s simple to pull a bench into the living layout for extra seating during gatherings. In short, the change solved both the dining and living challenges in a budget-friendly way.

Below are before-and-after views of the space so you can see how the room changed with the benches in place. The small swap transformed the vibe and function of our open-plan living area, proving that thoughtful, multipurpose furniture can make a big difference.
