Hallelujah — the sun is finally back on the East Coast, and we took advantage of it to photograph our newly completed bonus room. “Finished” is a flexible word around here since we’re always tweaking, but the space now blends fun, function, and a seriously comfortable spot to curl up and stay put. The couch is a vortex of coziness that’s nearly impossible to resist.
If you missed the earlier updates, this room started as an unfinished storage area above the garage that we transformed into a usable living space. We drywalled, added built-ins and floating shelves to a window niche, and created a wire-free TV wall. It’s almost surreal to think how different it looked at the start of the year.
Our goal was for the room to feel casual and playful while serving several practical needs for the whole family. We’ve discovered the benefit of a contained play area that’s outside the main living room and not tucked inside a child’s bedroom. At the same time, this space works well for adults: movie nights, extra guest sleeping, or a quiet corner to read (the door is one of our favorite features).
We organized the room into four main zones that cover most activities:
- Arts and crafts desk
- Mega sofa plus TV
- Dress-up corner
- Wall-to-wall storage with floating shelves
The art desk has become a constant morning destination for the kids. It’s the first stop before breakfast and has even helped make morning showers less of a luxury and more of a reality. The desk and chairs were a lucky hand-me-down from a neighbor and have been put to great use.
We kept art supplies simple and organized. Small painted wooden racks serve as trays, and clear cups hold pencils, crayons, and markers. Using a small soup can as a size reference made it easy to find containers that fit on the shelves. The result is a tidy, inviting space that encourages creativity.
One of the most playful touches is the butterfly installation. We planned the arrangement with removable post-it notes, then swapped in feather butterflies mounted on bendable wires with adhesive circles. The wires let them hover slightly off the wall and be repositioned for the perfect composition.
Facing the art desk, you’ll see the large patterned rug, the wall-mounted TV, and what we affectionately call the “Mega Sofa-Thing.” It’s three modular chaises attached together to form an enormous, lounge-ready seating area that has already hosted movie nights and sleepovers. With a few linens it transforms easily into a guest bed when needed.
The sofa choice was practical: durable enough for family use but large and comfortable enough to make the room feel lived-in. Neutral slipcovers keep the look calm and adaptable, and the seating has quickly become a favorite fallback for weekend naps and morning slow starts.
Tucked behind the couch is the dress-up corner, stocked with costumes, capes, hats, and props that had been living in an overflowing bin elsewhere. Putting this collection on display made it far more accessible and fun for the kids. A full-length mirror and a few baskets round out the area and encourage more imaginative play.
We also added hooks for hanging costumes and framed a playful piece of kid-made artwork made from photographed “recipes” and printed at an affordable engineering-print size. Small, inexpensive touches like that personalize the room and make it feel lived-in.
We didn’t flood the room with new toys; instead we redistributed favorites from other parts of the house so the items get more use. The play kitchen and building blocks are now easier to share, and the lower cabinets keep puzzles and games within reach for small hands.
Overall, the bonus room quickly became a versatile, much-used part of our home. It took a little time and furniture to make it feel complete, but now it supports play, relaxation, TV viewing, overnight guests, and everything in between. It also makes the upstairs feel more finished and intentional.
The transformation from the dated, unfinished storage space we started with to this warm, functional bonus room has been hugely satisfying. It’s the kind of room that invites creativity, relaxation, and shared family time—the simple kind of improvements that make a house feel more like a home.
