DIY Holiday Welcome Mat: A Simple, Stylish Gift

When Real Simple asked us to create a DIY holiday gift idea for their site, Sherry celebrated with more enthusiasm than was probably necessary, and we eagerly assembled a short tutorial for a seasonal welcome mat you can slide under someone’s Christmas tree — and later tuck under their front door. It’s an affordable, approachable project that makes a thoughtful handmade gift.

This project is essentially a quick and low-cost makeover using an inexpensive doormat (we used Ikea mats), painter’s tape, and outdoor-grade spray paint. The technique is straightforward: base coat the mat, mask off your design with tape, spray a contrasting color, and peel the tape to reveal a crisp pattern. With minimal time and supplies, you can create a custom mat that looks polished and festive.

We used outdoor-approved spray paint so the design would be durable enough to handle weather and foot traffic. Because outdoor and enamel paints are formulated to withstand rain and snow, they hold up well once fully dry — you shouldn’t worry about painted footprints tracking inside the house. Most store-bought decorative mats are painted or treated in a similar way, so this method follows a common, practical approach. Enamel spray paints tend to be the most long-lasting, but many outdoor-labeled options perform very well too; our mats, made months earlier, have remained in good condition.

For our main version we created a reindeer antler motif, which was charming and playful. But we also made a second design as a backup and to share an alternate idea: a snow globe-inspired mat with white snowflakes on an icy blue background. It uses the same basic steps as the reindeer mat but requires a bit less taping and a little more spraying. For this variation we used a large round doormat, also sourced from Ikea.

The snowflake mat starts with two coats of white paint applied to the entire mat. Once the base is fully dry, cut painter’s tape into short strips and arrange small asterisk-style snowflake shapes across the surface. These snowflakes don’t need to be intricate — the simple, graphic look feels crisp and modern, and it’s easy to achieve. Press the tape firmly to ensure good adhesion so paint won’t seep under the edges.

After the tape is in place, apply a couple of coats of your chosen blue spray paint over the entire mat and let it dry. Carefully peel off the tape to reveal the white snowflakes against the blue background. One tip from our experience: avoid repeatedly lifting and re-sticking the tape while adjusting the design, because tape that has lost adhesion can lift during the blue coat and create softer edges. If that happens, remove the compromised pieces and replace them with fresh tape, or repaint the whole mat white and start the asterisk placement again for a clean redo.

We did encounter a couple of small hiccups when shooting process photos and moving the tape around, which caused some peeling and uneven coverage on the blue coat. Those issues weren’t inherent to the technique — they were self-inflicted by over-handling the tape. The solution is simple: stick the tape once and leave it, or use fresh tape if you need to reposition elements.

Overall, making doormats is a quick, rewarding craft that yields a practical present. A doormat is surprisingly universal: most people have at least one exterior door, so this gift is both useful and personal. We think it’s a fun idea to deliver the finished mat to someone’s porch and leave a small note so the recipient knows who made it.
