First Day of School 2013: Photos and Memories

It happened again: our little girl is back in preschool for another year. The first-day-of-school routine felt familiar, but the difference between this year’s photos and last year’s nearly took our breath away. She’s clearly grown—more confident, taller, and brimming with personality.

We have a few photo traditions for Clara, and although her monthly photo project wrapped up at her third birthday, it was a joy to revive another habit: taking first-day pictures. It’s always entertaining to see how a single instruction—“smile big!”—can produce unexpectedly candid expressions. When we prompted her, “No, like you’re really happy and excited,” she obliged with a grin that felt somehow both posed and genuine.

This year she’s returning to the same preschool she attended last year, but with an extended schedule: three mornings a week instead of two. She’s excited to reunite with her friends, meet new teachers, and explore the changes in her classroom. For us, there’s a practical upside too—those preschool mornings provide a little pocket of calm at home, time for projects, errands, or just catching up on work and household tasks.

One small consequence of moving recently is that the drive to school is a bit longer. Our new house adds about 15 minutes to the commute, so managing two round-trips takes an extra hour each day. It’s a noticeable change, but entirely worth it for a school she loves and the enthusiasm she brings each morning.

Watching her in the photos, we caught some delightful moments. At times she struck a perfect little catalog-model pose, giving us a confident strut and a dramatic tilt of the head. Other shots revealed the impatience of a child eager to join her classmates—her “can we go now?” face, complete with an imploring look that easily melts parents’ hearts.

Before heading out, we sorted the practical details. Sherry found a simple school bag at an outlet for an unbeatable price, and labeled it with Clara’s name as requested by the school. The teachers ask that every item be labeled to help avoid mix-ups, so a bright red marker made the name easy to spot. Little rituals like packing a favorite nap blanket, labeling the lunchbox, and checking for completed forms are minor touches that make the transition smoother.

There’s a mix of emotions that comes with the first day: excitement for new experiences, relief at having a predictable routine, and a little nostalgia for how quickly time is passing. As parents, we love hearing about her day when we pick her up—the songs she learned, the games she played, and the friends she sat with. Those snippets are tiny rewards that remind us why those morning runs are worth the extra time on the road.

Preschool offers so much more than a place to play for a few hours each week. It’s a space for social growth, creativity, and learning independence. Whether she’s discovering a favorite corner of the classroom or showing off the craft she made with pride, each small milestone feels meaningful. And while we appreciate the extra quiet hours at home, we’re ultimately happiest knowing she’s excited and thriving with her friends and teachers.

How did the first day of school go for your family? Whether it was full of tears, triumphant smiles, or a perfectly posed photo, those early fall mornings have a way of creating memories that stick with us all year long.
