I’m a BIG fan of your site. I wanted to share my living room makeover with you. We had an oddly shaped concrete mantel and left it alone for more than two years because we didn’t know what to do with it. After browsing your archives, I felt inspired to tackle the entire mantel wall.
First, I picked up two pieces of reclaimed wood molding and a 1×12 board for about $30 and began building a custom mantel top. With my husband tied up at work, I decided to handle the carpentry myself. Using a chop saw and finish nails, I assembled the pieces, primed, and painted everything with two coats of semi-gloss white. Because the concrete surround looked dingy next to the freshly painted mantel, I painted the concrete the same white and then set the mantel cap on top. I love the clean curve created by the crown molding and crisp white paint.
Next, I tackled the huge mirror above the mantel. I’d hoped to buy a smaller framed mirror, but couldn’t find one that fit our budget. Rather than remove the large heavy mirror, I installed a wood frame directly over it. I used salvaged molding at 35 cents per foot, cut 45-degree corners, and finished the frame with two coats of a rich ebony stain. Installing the frame was a little tricky, but a helpful tip from a local hardware employee suggested using double-sided tape, which made installation simple and effective.
