Oh happy day! We’re excited to share another design makeover with readers who love transformations. A few months ago Corinne and her husband Keith asked for help turning their cluttered den into a minimalist, modern TV room. They’d started working with a designer but ran into budget limits, so they reached out for practical, affordable ideas to simplify and update the space.

To begin, we reviewed the before photos and identified the main problems: too much furniture, competing styles, and a lack of cohesive color or focal point. Our goal was to clear the visual clutter, improve flow, and create a comfortable TV lounge with a clean, modern aesthetic. The plan focused on paring down furnishings, adding purposeful lighting, and introducing a few well-chosen accents to give the room personality without overwhelming it.
We created a mood board to guide the transformation, concentrating on neutral modern pieces, sculptural lighting, and a restrained palette with energetic pops of color. The mood board emphasized texture—think a textured green rug and lightweight curtains—to keep the room warm and layered, and a few bold orange accents to inject cheerfulness. The intent was a room that reads crisp and contemporary but still feels relaxed and inviting.
When the changes were implemented, the results were dramatic. The new layout opened the space, creating an uncluttered sightline to the TV and seating area. Replacing heavy or mismatched furniture with streamlined pieces instantly simplified the room. A distinctive light fixture became a sculptural focal point, drawing the eye upward and adding visual interest without busying the space.
The chosen textiles reinforced the minimalist-modern theme while keeping the room comfortable. The textured green rug grounds the seating zone and adds subtle color, while the curtains frame the windows softly, allowing natural light to filter through. Carefully selected orange accents—pillows and small decor items—introduce playful contrast that brightens the neutral base without competing with it.
Beyond aesthetics, the redesign improved usability. Fewer, better-chosen pieces created more functional circulation and made the room feel larger. Thoughtful accessory placement and hidden storage solutions reduced visible clutter, giving the den a tranquil, purposeful vibe. The combination of form and function turned a chaotic mix of furnishings into a cohesive TV room ideal for relaxing, entertaining, and family time.
The finished space feels clean and modern yet cheerful and inviting—exactly the balance we hoped to achieve. It’s a strong example of how a few strategic decisions—lighting, a simplified color scheme, and a focus on texture and proportion—can transform a room without a huge budget. Keith and Corinne did a wonderful job executing the plan and sending their after photos; their enthusiasm made the whole project especially rewarding.
