Budget Kitchen Makeover: How $400 Completely Transformed an 80s Kitchen

When Jessica sent us before-and-after photos of her kitchen, we were amazed at how far a $400 budget could go. Below is her letter describing the project and the materials they used.

I’m always inspired by what I see on your site. My husband Josh and I recently tackled a low-cost kitchen makeover and discovered that $400 can go a very long way when you focus on the right changes. Our budget covered paint, an electric sander, a jigsaw, hardware, primer, construction adhesive, nails, and beadboard — everything we needed to modernize an 80s-era kitchen and make it feel more current.

The “before” photo was taken before we moved in, so please excuse the outdated light fixture and the furniture. We especially disliked the faux wood paneling beneath the bar and along the sides of the cabinets. To hide it, we installed beadboard and painted it white. Installation was straightforward: we had the boards cut at the store and borrowed a tack gun to secure them. The beadboard has become our favorite element of the remodel because it immediately warmed and updated the space without a major expense.

For paint, we used a deep green for accent areas and a warm white for the beadboard and trim. The color choices helped to create contrast and bring a modern feel to the cabinets and walls.
