The Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) is large and mostly free, making it a comfortable, air-conditioned way to spend an afternoon exploring works from many eras. We especially enjoyed the family-friendly activity room where kids and adults could create art with provided materials and prompts.
The Perot Museum exceeded our expectations. Even though our kids are tweens and teens, they loved the interactive exhibits. Highlights included the gemstone room, the earthquake simulator, and the hands-on human body area with physical challenges. The top floor offers a build-your-own-bird activity that kept both kids engaged. The exhibits are modern and very interactive, perfect for families who enjoy learning through play.

Beyond downtown, Dallas has distinct neighborhoods worth exploring. We spent the most time in the Bishop Arts District, a vibrant area full of independent shops, galleries, and restaurants. It’s a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood with character, and we wished our rental had been closer.
We enjoyed browsing a stationery and art store where our son bought supplies and my partner picked up an art print. Other favorite stops included a mercantile shop where everyone bought a small item, a plant shop we admired but didn’t buy from because we were flying home, and a flower shop we enjoyed browsing. Bishop Arts is ideal for casual strolling, local shopping, and grabbing a coffee or snack between activities.

Unexpectedly, games were a theme of our trip. We visited an arcade-style spot with a flat entry fee that lets you play unlimited vintage video games and pinball—think retro arcade fun without feeding quarters. Our family loved the pinball machines and the relaxed vibe.

Rooms featured physical and mental challenges like a grid of color-changing squares you step on and a target wall where you throw foam balls. A sprawling beer-garden-style spot along the Katy Trail offered relaxed outdoor seating and great people-watching. A breakfast-and-brunch spot with a retro vibe served a generous, satisfying meal that ended up being our favorite of the trip. A burger joint with creative options impressed us so much we wished we had gone twice. We also loved a chill warehouse-style café with board games on the table—perfect for a leisurely breakfast before exploring the city. For a pleasant dinner, we dined in a glass-walled restaurant overlooking Klyde Warren Park, which made for a lovely evening atmosphere.

We left a lot for next time. In Bishop Arts alone there were several restaurants we wanted to try and a pie shop we’re eager to visit. Other attractions on our list include a historic stockyards area, a vintage trolley ride, a museum focused on a pivotal moment in American history, an observation tower with city views, an immersive art complex, and a large public plaza known for longhorn sculptures. Dallas offers so many options that we’ll happily return to explore the rest.

We were impressed by how family-friendly and varied Dallas is.
