Sunny Yellow and Wood Kitchen Makeover

When Bonnie sent her charming kitchen before-and-after photos, we knew we had to share the transformation. Below is her note describing the project and the details of what she used to create this warm, budget-friendly kitchen.

My husband and I bought my grandparents’ home last November and have been renovating it ever since. We turned the place upside down and, over about five weeks, achieved this result on a very tight budget. Most items are from IKEA, thrifted finds, or things we made ourselves. We drew a lot of inspiration from Young House Love and used many of their how-to guides. Our readers enjoyed the kitchen before-and-after photos, so I wanted to share them with you too. We live in Franklin, NC, not far from Virginia, and we love all the southern charm. Thank you for the inspiration! – Bonnie

Here’s Bonnie’s dated kitchen before:

And here it is after her affordable, hands-on renovation:

The transformation is lovely. The room now feels light, airy, and welcoming—even though the appliances and cabinets remained the same. The eating nook creates a cozy focal point, and the striking turquoise stove adds a bold, personal touch. Thoughtful details like the art, textiles, and curated accessories enhance the space without overwhelming it. Bonnie’s approach demonstrates how careful styling, paint, and selective swaps can dramatically refresh a kitchen for a fraction of the cost of a full remodel.

Below is a concise source list Bonnie provided, highlighting the main items and DIY elements that shaped the finished space:

  • Countertops: VÄRDE
  • Wall color: Valspar low-VOC in “Swiss Coffee” (#7002-16)
  • Curtain fabric: Tea Types Writing pattern by Timeless Treasures
  • Curtain hardware: DEKA curtain wire with clips
  • Lighting: Fado pendant light and Calypso ceiling lamp
  • Shelving and storage: FÖRHÖJA wall shelf, VÄRDE wall shelf with hooks, VÄRDE wall shelf, and BESTÅ shelf unit
  • Accessories: egg crate, blomster candlesticks, SLOM jars, DROPPAR spice jars, and SEBASTIAN bar stool
  • Thrifted finds: ball jars, Fire-King jadite green bowls, green glass vase, and frames
  • DIY projects: cabinet door knobs, picture frames, a painted feature wall, bench cushions, and curtains

Bonnie’s project highlights several practical strategies for renovating on a budget while achieving a high-impact look:

  • Keep existing cabinets and appliances if they’re in good condition—refinishing, new hardware, and updated counters can make them feel new.
  • Use paint strategically. A fresh wall color and updated trim give the entire room a cleaner, brighter appearance.
  • Mix new, inexpensive pieces with thoughtfully chosen thrifted items to add character without overspending.
  • DIY small projects—like cushions, curtains, and custom knobs—to personalize the space and save money.
  • Layer lighting and accessories to create depth and warmth without changing the room’s footprint.

The result is a kitchen that feels both lived-in and refreshed, combining practicality with style. Bonnie’s careful selection of affordable materials, paired with meaningful vintage finds and handmade touches, produced a space that’s functional and full of personality. Her project is a great example of how a few deliberate updates can dramatically improve a room’s look and feel without a full demolition.

We love Bonnie’s make-do-and-improve spirit. She proves that thoughtful choices—like swapping countertops for cost-effective options, adding new lighting, and styling with collected pieces—can elevate a kitchen quickly and affordably.
